One morning I answered the door to a man I didn't know. We chatted a bit about people we possibly had in common, then he asked whether he could smoke a joint, and told me he was a roving reporter for High Times [the marijuana enthusiasts' magazine]. He had heard I was interested in conspiracy, and brought out something like 23 pages of closely typed carbon copy called The Gemstone File. He had been carrying it around for some time, unable to work out what to do with it. He left it with me, and I never saw him again.

The Gemstone File was the entire background of the Kennedy assassination; names and addresses, who had done it, and the historical perspective. Back in 1976 newsagents didn't have copiers, and the nearest one was Swiss Cottage library. But I opened the door to go there and then thought, who was that man? In the great conspiracy web, the problem is that you don't know who or what people are working for. The curtains twitched in the house opposite. I remained inside the whole day, unable to work out how to get the manuscript photocopied without arousing suspicion. Finally, I rang Martin Walker and he made 40 copies, 20 for each of us to send out. To have your own copier is a comfort. I can still recall the irrational paranoia of that day.

JFK is Alive: A Modern Legend

Miss Smith states that she heard the story from F. Lee Bailey, the noted criminal attorney, when he spoke at the Lycea dinner at I.U. The legend has also been attributed to Truman Capote, who of course knew the Kennedy family and in fact lived in the same apartment complex as Senator Robert Kennedy. The "Capote" version received considerable notoreity in March, 1969 when it was picked up and broadcast by right-wing Chicago radio personality Howard Miller (see the Chicago Sun-Times, March 8, 1969, pp. 1,32). One of Miller's listeners had sent him a copy of a mimeographed letter apparently then being circulated and attributed to Capote's authorship which Miller subsequently read over the air, The broadcast caused much excitement and was soon denounced by Albert E. Jenner Jr., who had been senior counsel for the Warren Commission. Capote senior editor at Random House issued a disclaimer when questioned, At around the same time a similar story about Kennedy and Jackie-Onassis was being run by the National Informer, a garish tabloid published out of Chicago.

Cincinatti Post (August 16, 1978)

Hustler magazine owner Larry Flynt says whoever tried to kill him on March 6 was working either for the CIA or the FBI, and they still want him dead because he knows who really assassinated President John F. Kennedy. Flynt, under treatment in Columbus, Ohio, for the bullet wound that paralyzed his legs, posted $1 million reward for information in the Kennedy slaying. He says it paid off; he'll do his expose in October, November and December issues of his magazine, whether he lives or not. Said he, "I know my life may be in jeopardy. If they killme, they kill me, but I must give the public the facts.

The “Las Vegas” Files are Examined

In 1995, I was going through my safe and file cabinets, and came across the sealed, manila envelope that had been placed in my trust by my financial planning client a decade earlier. I had completely forgotten about it. I called his home to see what he wanted me to do with it. His wife informed me that Mr. C. had suffered a stroke a year earlier, and was confined to a nursing home. He was in his 70’s now, and was not doing very well. In short, she didn’t know anything about the “file” and suggested that I could just dispose of it.

I tossed it into the trash bin, but then thought that I should at least see what all the fuss was about. In many ways, I wish I had never opened it. It was a true “Pandora’s Box”, and I was shocked to read its contents. It was “file #5” of a group of 7 files called the “Gemstone” files. I don’t know what the other six files contained, but this one was a literal ball-buster. It was the FULL STORY of the CIA-planned and executed contract “hit” of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, president of the United States. It was full of very complete specifics, including such things as photostats of cancelled checks, travel vouchers, orders on CIA letterhead, personnel “lists” of participants, disposition of witnesses and evidence, etc. The problem was, I recognized the names of many of the key men who participated in the assassination, as well as the massive cover-up that followed.

These were not all Jewish organized crime bosses, some were men linked to my LDS church authorities and some were nationally prominent politicians in my beloved Republican Party! The file was extremely damning towards George HW Bush, who in 1963 was the CIA head in Dallas. The obvious involvement of the FBI and Dallas PD, and their subsequent squelching of information as outlined in the file made me physically sick. There was no person in Federal Law Enforcement that I could trust with this information, that is, IF IT WAS INDEED LEGITIMATE! At first, I refused to believe it could be legitimate at all. My paradigm of perception refused to believe it could possibly be factual.

However, I could not understand WHY my “client” would have such a file, and WHY would he want it sent to Beverly Hills CA, as well as a notice sent to Hank Greenspan ofthe Las Vegas Sun newspaper, if my client happened to “die suspiciously?” Like I said, it was a definite “pandora’s box”, one that I soon realized was too big forme. I kept thinking I ought to shred its contents, but I couldn’t bring myself to do so.

The File Goes Home to John John.

During the summer of 1998, I was involved in actively protesting the expansion of Circle 4 Farm’s gigantic hog factory farm into Iron County. My grass-roots citizen’s organization CRSA (Citizens for Responsible and Sustainable Agriculture) had received a bit of national notoriety, with a number of AP wire stories circulating the nation. One such story caught the eye of a publication called George Magazine. The editor and staff contacted me and scheduled an appointment to meet and review my story.

The editor of George Magazine flew into Cedar City in his private jet to meet me, and shoot a photo spread. We spent the entire day, a Saturday, together.

At the end of the day, at a local steak house, we sat down for a concluding meal. Over salad, I had to confess to the editor that I had never even heard of, much less read a copy of George Magazine until he had called me. He reached into his briefcase and produced a copy. Looking at it, I was surprised to see that it was owned and founded by John Kennedy Jr.

I asked him about “John, and his politics.” I was told that John was a real “champion of the under-dog” and that was why they were producing the story on CRSA and me.

I commented: “I believe that my image of John is like most Americans. The enduring image of little ‘John-John’ courageously stepping forward and giving his best salute as the caisson carrying his father’s body slowly rolled by. Tell me, does John accept the ‘official Warren Commission’account of the assassination, or does he think there was more to it? At this late date, does it even matter?”

The editor nodded and said: “Of course he doesn’t accept the Warren Commission, but there is not a lot he, or anyone else can do about it! And I guarantee you, it DOES INDEED matter, at least to him. It is one of his major goals in life to find out the Truth!”

I replied: “Has he ever heard of something called the ‘Gemstone Files’?”

With that, the air became electrified. The editor laid down his salad fork and said: “What do YOU know about the ‘Gemstone’?”

“Oh, it just might be that I have a copy of file # 5. Does that interest you?” I casually volunteered.

“You can’t be serious! Are you serious? Don’t kid about something like that! Where did you get it?” he almost screamed.

The dinner was immediately over, even though our steaks were just coming in from the kitchen. We had them placed into containers to take with us. The editor had to SEE the infamous Gemstone immediately. He couldn’t wait until the meal was finished.

It was late on a Saturday night in Cedar City, Utah. I handed him the file, and he offered to compensate me for it. I refused. I asked him only one thing in return; if the information proved out to be genuine, that I needed to know. I just wanted justice to be served, and the guilty parties prosecuted.

I was awakened the next morning at 5:00. John’s editor explained that he had been up all night reading the file. He had called John directly, and he was told to fly it immediately back to John. John had again offered to compensate me up to $10,000 for the lead. He felt it was that good. I politely refused, and gently
reminded him of my earlier request. I just wanted to know if the information was genuine. To me, that would be payment enough.

The rest of 1998 went by quickly. The national political stage was being set. It looked like George W. Bush was seeking to secure the nomination to run against Al Gore.

On the 5th of July, 1999, my home phone rang. Joan answered it and said:

“True, it’s for you.” As I answered it, a very polite masculine voice on the other end said: “Hello, True Ott, do you have a moment to speak? This is John Kennedy calling!”

I immediately asked him to hold while I went to the privacy of my home office to take his call. After a few minutes of small talk, he told me: “Well, I understand that you want to know what I think of your file. I want you to know that I have spent over six figures in private investigators to verify its contents. I can say to you without hesitation that its contents are indeed factual. As a matter of fact, because of this file, a federal grand jury will be convening within the next few weeks. It is my opinion, as well as my attorneys, that this federal grand jury will pass down an indictment against George Herbert Walker Bush for conspiracy to commit murder against my father, and will also indict others as the evidence unfolds. If George W. thinks he can run for dogcatcher after this grand jury convenes and his father indicted, he is sorely mistaken.”

I was thrilled, yet deeply saddened by John’s disclosures to me. I asked him how he felt about what he was about to do. Did he understand that it would shake American politics, especially the Republican Party to its very foundation?

He replied: “Yes, I do realize the gravity of the story and my accusations, but the guilty must be brought to justice.”

I pressed: “But Mr. Kennedy, how do YOU feel?”

The phone went silent for a minute or two. Then John replied: “I feel like a mighty weight has been lifted from my shoulders. For the first time in my life, I feel empowered. I feel my Father’s spirit beside me on this, and finally, I can exorcise a few demons from my life.”

He was definitely emotional, and very close to tears. I knew that I was. I was a part of American history. I had helped a brother’s search for truth.

I warned him to be careful, that such actions were potentially very dangerous. He agreed, and said that he was “taking every precaution.”

Then, in a quiet voice, he asked me for my banking information. He wished to wire $50K to my account. I told him thanks, but no thanks. “Give it to charity,” I said, “I don’t think it right to accept money for such terrible information. I am totally satisfied knowing that the file went to the very person that needed it the very most! Above all, John, please BE CAREFUL!”

John Kennedy Jr. thanked me profusely, and said that he wished there were more people in America like True Ott. He said that some day, he would somehow return the favor. I liked that. It was good to have made a friend such as John Kennedy.

A little over two weeks later, on July 16, 1999, John Kennedy Jr., along with his wife and her sister, were killed in a plane crash en route to Hyannisport for a family wedding. My new friend was gone, and the guilty involved in BOTH murders have still not been punished. I know the truth, however. There is no doubt whatsoever, why John was killed. It was NOT an accident!

The Absolutely True, Somewhat Spurious and Totally Impossible

The Gemstone File

While Marks' thorough investigations of MKULTRA earned a place in the historical canon, more "theoretical" conspiracies still strive for legitimacy, such as the findings and extrapolations of a San Franciscan named Bruce Roberts. Encapsulated in a poorly mimeographed 22-page document titled A Skeleton Key to the Gemstone File, which was compiled by conspiracy maven Mae Brussell and her assistant Stephanie Caruana, this 1975 pamphlet portrays Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis as the ultimate global puppeteer.

Roberts' theory is extraordinarily reductionist, like those alleging that the Illuminati, the Freemasons, the Trilateral Commission or some other hyper-secret cabal at the acme of the sociopolitical pyramid controls everything. Reductionist conspiracies don't make much sense unless accompanied by willful suspension of disbelief, and A Skeleton Key is no exception.

A Skeleton Key claims Roberts worked for several years after WWII making faux baubles for Hollywood actresses; he began collecting evidence in the '50s for his own Unified Field Conspiracy Theory after he surmised that the Hughes Corporation, owned by Howard Hughes, stole several of his ersatz rubies to use in the corporation's new invention -- lasers. (Wouldn't it have been a lot simpler to just buy the gems? Rev up your suspended disbelief, it gets stranger.)

Piqued by Hughes' affront, Roberts began a freelance investigation that would consume the rest of his life. Swapping his synthetic gemstones for information, Roberts picked the brains of a loose network of intelligence spooks and diplomatic contacts; he accompanied each gem with a one-page "history" briefly outlining a piece of the enormous underworld puzzle he was constructing.

Roberts allegedly made his contacts at a bar on lower Nob Hill called the Drift Inn at Bush and Taylor, today the site of Yong San Lounge. A Skeleton Key explains that the hootchery was a favorite hangout of the CIA and Naval Intelligence crowd. After a long day of supersecret work, the spies would descend on the joint to swap yarns and talk shop. What Roberts didn't overhear or cajole for himself, the bartender, Al Strom, provided by way of clandestine recordings he was making of the unusual barside banter. (Strom is now deceased -- his son denies any knowledge of his dad taping anyone.)

Roberts wove what he heard into a crazy quilt of conspiratorial skullduggery that "explains" almost every untoward political assassination and scandal of the last 50 years. Some highlights:

A Skeleton Key outlines Onassis' rise from lowly drugrunner to the Gnomes of Zurich's wonderboy thanks to lucrative shipping deals with maritime bigwig Joseph Kennedy. (Onassis agreed to run hooch into Boston for the booze-hound brahmin.) After WWII, movie-mogul Howard Hughes challenged Onassis' power by buying up every politician in sight. Onassis had him kidnapped in 1957, A Skeleton Key asserts, and then assumed control of Hughes' considerable assets -- including a recent acquisition: Vice President Richard Nixon. With Nixon in one pocket and Kennedy in the other, the winner of the 1960 presidential election was really a lusty Greek shipping tycoon.

Ah, but the best-laid plans ... After his stroke in 1961, Joe Kennedy lost control of both his bladder and his newly elected son. Jack and brother Bobby (being the righteous idealists every conspiracy theorist knows they were) clamped down on Onassis. The tycoon countered by wacking JFK in Dallas with mob guns and some CIA help.

Five years later, threatened with the prospect of another Kennedy in the White House, Onassis had a hypnotized dupe named Sirhan Sirhan ice RFK in Los Angeles.

With Bobby dead, Onassis' boy Nixon skated into the White House only to blow it all at the Watergate. A Skeleton Key asserts that during the months preceding the break-in, CIA spook E. Howard Hunt and "plumber" G. Gordon Liddy were regulars at the Drift Inn, where they encountered Bruce Roberts (Liddy would later name his White House domestic espionage scheme the Gemstone Plan). It further asserts that while sitting at the bar, Hunt and Liddy hatched their Watergate plot to retrieve information the Democrats had supposedly collected on Nixon and Onassis, and that barkeep Strom taped the conversations and passed them on to Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham.

A Skeleton Key claims that Graham then set a trap for the burglars with the help of famed San Francisco private detective Hal Lipset, and that Lipset, disguised as a mailman, retaped the door when the burglars returned a second time, ensuring their capture. Graham then fed the story, sans some important details, in the guise of Deep Throat to her own reporters, Woodward and Bernstein.

Today, Lipset laughs at the very mention of the Gemstone caper.
"I was supposed to be working for Graham. I was supposed to be working for Nixon. I did in fact work for the Watergate [Senate] Committee," Lipset says. "Boy, I must have been pretty clever to pull all of that off."

According to A Skeleton Key, Onassis' death in 1975 sent political shockwaves around the globe; Ford, Kissinger and Rockefeller were left "squatting like toads on the corpse of America."

Bruce Roberts died of lung cancer in 1976, shortly after A Skeleton Key to the Gemstone File surfaced. Hustler ran a heavily edited version of it in 1979, revealing that Brussell and Caruana compiled it. Brussell purportedly knew Roberts and possessed several hundred of his gemstone "histories."

More recently, two books -- Jim Keith's The Gemstone File (1992) and Gerald Carroll's Project Seek (1994) -- have explored the veracity of the Skeleton Key.

Since Brussell's death in 1988 (more about that later), her files have been kept in a secret location by KAZU-FM, the Pacific Grove radio station that still broadcasts reruns of her weekly rants. Radio personality and co-host of the station's conspiracy-addled Lighthouse Report, Marilyn Coleman, confirms the presence of Bruce Roberts' Gemstone "histories" in Brussell's files.

"Some of Gemstone may be credible," Coleman says. "But most of it is junk. You should see the Torbitt document."

The June 1975 Skeleton Key

According to Stephanie Caruana, she released three different versions of the Skeleton Key. The first was released in April 1975. I have never seen a copy and am not sure if any have survived. The second was released in May 1975, and is the version that is found on the web and in all the books. There are links to it to the right. The third was dated June 1975 and I obtained a copy from the National Archives. This Key was part of the collection of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, record #180-10106-10433. Most of it is the same as the May version but it has an different opening and closing section. The document opens:

PREFACE

People have asked me to explain how and where I got this Gemstone information.

In March, 1974, I was an investigative journalist for Playgirl magazine. I met and worked with Mae Magnin Brussell, a "conspiracy researcher." In August, Brussell showed me some unidentifed papers, regarding an article we were to "co-author" for Playgirl. I read them with interest; then, using Brussell's collection of research material, wrote the "Onassis is Hughes" article for Playgirl.

In September, I visited Bruce Roberts in San Francisco, and asked to see more of the file. He gave me a waiver to read it at various foreign consulates. The waiver referred to "Gemstone papers" and this was the first time I began to understand what I have been reading. In October, I ended my association with Brussell, and moved to San Francisco.

In November, I read more of Gemstone at a consulate which prefers not to be identified. Trying to make sense of my notes I developed a brief chronology which later became the Gemstone Skeleton Key.

In December and January, I researched the Gemstone Chappaquiddick information, and verified Roberts' accuracy in virtually every detail. I also did some research on the JFK assassination. There to, the true picture began to emerge; it corresponded with Gemstone. I wrote an article on Chappaquiddick, which was turned down by every publisher who saw it. This brought home to me the fact that regardless of the truth, the media would rather see Teddy Kennnedy President than exposed as a murderer.

By February, 1975, I was completely broke. I had effectively lost my job with Playgirl, because, of my interest in national politics. I tried to make some money by turning away from Gemstone and writing on other subjects.

On March 15, Roberts entered U.S. (Moffitt) Hospital, for treatment of a grapefruit-sized tumor over the heart. I visited him often. Doctor friends told me that if he had cancer, the prognosis was poor. Roberts told me that if he had cancer, it had been induced. I felt grief--that the only man I ever knew who searched for the truth, and told it--to anyone who would listen--was being murdered for it. And rage--at those who were murdering him. And shame--at miy own inaction, sitting back, watching him do it, and telling myself there was nothing I could do. I realized that even if I kept writing articles based on Gemstone, the articles wouldn't explain anything. All events are rooted in the past, and affect the future. That is the only way they can be understood. Gemstone is a historical continuum--and no one would understand what I was talking about unless they got a glimpse of the whole continuum.

In April, the first Gemstone Skeleton Keys went out, to Penthouse, Playgirl, Village Voice, New Times, Rolling Stone, and Playboy, and others of the so-called "liberal" political press. And either ignored or rejected the information. Roberts was out of the hospital and recovering.

By May, I knew the controlled press would not publish this information. But things work both ways. IBM and Xerox have made a fortune putting copiers on almost every corner. Anyone can take a few of the dollars the Mafia missed, copy this, and pass it on to someone else

Reading the Gemstone catalog of the thousands of individuals murdered to keep this information secret, I do not think I am immune. But I am even more afraid to go on living in this society, with its Kissinger-Schlesinger "brinkmanship," and the eerie calm with which it has murdered millions in Indochina and Africa--for pure greed--and with which it murders its own people, to maintain the power structure.

This Mafia government is a paper tiger, trembling in fear of its sins becoming known. Its illusory domestic power rests on the fear and ignorance of the poeople--and that depends on the collusion of the media. Only with the people's apathy stands between the Mafia and hang-ropes--with the blessings of the "civilized," non-Mafia people of the globe--and the possibility of a return to the principles of intent set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Its awesome arsenal of death may prove illusory as well--in that gruesome half-hours of ultimate confrontations when "our leaders" may discover that "our" buttons don't work--while "theirs" do. The fact that you are reading this means that the blustering bully boys of U.S. diplomacy have not dared to put that final question--their last--and that you do have guts.

People also ask: "What is a Gemstone? And What is a Gemstone with history?"

A Gemstone may be literally that: A synthetic ruby, or saphire, Or it may be symbolic. My "Gemstone" is a Dallas dime--described in the letter to President Sadat of Egypt. I paid for it--with a check inscribed, "For a Dallas Dime, with history." The Sadat--who parlayed it into millions, at the risk of his life.

A Gemstone "history" is a paper, usually written by Roberts, containing important information not generally known. Gemstone papers are frequently letters. One was a lengthy "check endorsement." One--"We Ate Mary Jo's Liver--is a space-age satire--and a mindblowing masterpiece ranking with anything I have ever read.

What more can I say? Genius is a retrospective word we used to describe someone who produces something unique. Roberts reminds me that he is a scientist. But he is also a great author and historian--and so history shall judge him if there is a history.

"Gemstone" also refers to "the original Gemstone expoeriment"--and here I am lost. I do not know the details, and I don't think I care to know. Closest guess is:

Roberts studied physics with special interest in crystallography. Laboratory work focussed on development of synthetic gemstones, using seed crystals in mineral solutions, combined with heat and pressure over a period of time.

Working with these elements seems to have led to the theoretical and practical development of a weapon far more power than the "conventional" nuclear bomb. Roberts has described it as "anti-matter:" and "like the death of a dwarf star, which flares up for 11 hours, and then becomes a black hole in space."

Take it or leave it, folks. Thats all I know about "the original Gemstone experiment." All I can say is that after months of second guessing, bewilderment and skepticism, combined with research, study, and thought, I tend to take Roberts at his word: "it's as though I went to Tierra del Fuego and lit a match. To the natives, it would be terrifying. Even if I explained that it was simply phosphorus, reaching its ignition point on striking, they still wouldn't understand. In the same way, if you had told the people of Hiroshima five minutes before the first nuclear bomb hit that 100,000 of them were about to die, and how, they wouldn't have comprended either. Gemstone is like that. People won't understand it until it happens.

I might add that though Roberts has lost a son and a father to Mafia murderers, and recently survived a murder attempt on himself, he is tring to avoid the use of such deadly weapons. He firmly believes in hanging Mafia--not murdering millions of people who are trying to mind their own business.

I agree with that idea. That is why I have prepared this paper. The U.S. Mafia Government will make every effort to stop its distribution.

But it can't--because on every street corner is a copying machine. Use them.

Maybe the truth will set you free. 2000 years later.

I received a couple of emails from Gwen Sky, the woman who transcribed the Bruce Roberts' letters. God, what a job that must have been!

Good website. I am the person who transcribed the copies of the Roberts letters for Tom Davis several years ago, when he was still living in Santa Barbara and shortly before Tom passed away. Since that time, I have moved to Australia (permanantly). I have been wondering what ever happened to the files and to Stephanie Caruana - I have not met her personally, but I got in touch with her a few years ago via email at the time she was going to make the Gemstone CD available. Please if you see her please tell her hello and I am still waiting for the CD :-) Again, good website and I am glad to know that Gemstone is finally out there 'in total,' sort of.

Thanks for writing me back. I worked on the Gemstone letters for Tom Davis for around eight or so months, and yes, they were quite a chore. I can understand why nobody else seemed to want to tackle them. Please excuse this long and boring letter. I was so glad you put them on the net, finally. I have read so much crap about Gemstone over the years. By the way, there are a couple of things that I probably should clear up - not really important or earthshaking things, just things I have come accross since I got involved in this Gemstone Files thing.

Number one, somewhere in your site it mentions something about Stephanie Caruanas mispelling 'Tisserant' (Tisseront) (I think it was Martin Cannon) - I think that mispelling (among others) might have been mine, in a sense. But since the name was originally mispelled in Roberts' letters, so I can't take all the blame for that. I was never sure when I was typing the letters whether I should just leave the whole thing, typos, ranting and the lot, just the way it was, or correct some of the many typos, just to make the letters more coherent. I may have overlooked that particular mispelling, and undoubtedly, quite a few others as well. I have to admit that the sum of my experience as a typist at the time was email and chatrooms, and I learned how to use Microsoft Word while I was doing the Gemstone Files for Tom. Not much of a resume, but there you are.

I haven't reread the entire Gemstone Files as it appears on your site, but as far as I can tell, the one that you have appears to be the files as I did them. There are a couple of things I recognise in the one you have that appear only (first) in the copies I did. One is, the files never had exactly 349 pages (plus notes, I think) until after I did them. I don't know where you got the files - I was just glad to see the whole thing, for free, for everybody, for whtever it's worth. As far as I know, there were only a few people who ever had access to them, as has been said, but, aside from general curiosity, I don't really care. The so-called 'original' letters that I saw were never really 'original,' as in someone's actual handwriting. The files, as Tom first showed them to me, were copies of letters which Roberts apparently had copied on shiny grey 'mimeograph' paper - each page seemed to be a different length (cut off with scissors), and what I saw appeared to be the same 'mimeo' types I remember seeing as a child. Tom copied these letters at a print shop so that I could take them home and work on them. As far as the content of the files, I don't believe they were ever meant to be a manuscript or even a cohesive whole, as I have heard claimed.

I have had several copies of 'the original' Gemstone Files since I did the work for Tom, but I guess I never thought all that much about what they were 'worth.' Oh well. Story of my life. Whatever Stephanie Caruana or anyone else does with them, I don't really care. For all the mythology surrounding them, as far as I know, nobody has ever made that much money from them. I didn't make any great money from the work that I did, I didn't receive any 'credit' for doing the work that I did, and I didn't expect to make any money or receive any credit. At the time, I was doing a favour for a friend, and I was interested in what the Gemstone Files had to say.

I have my own opinions as to the validity of the Gemstone letters. I'm not a researcher, I'm a nobody, and I have always been amazed by the idea that, if I had access to them, why didn't a lot of other people (like: some person with a background in this type of research, for instance) have access to them, and why didn't they appear on the internet a lot sooner than they did? Afterall, a whole lot of people supposedly wanted to know where they were, but apparently, nobody, after seeing them, wanted to transcribe them.

There are a couple of things in Gemstone that I would be interested in knowing more about, but almost everybody who writes about them seems to be more interested in whether Onassis was The Godfather of Cosa Nostra or Roberts was just a raving lunatic, obsessed with the Pope. One thing that intrigued me was the bit about Connolly's 'extra' bullet (I forget which foreign country he was secreted to, to have that removed). Another was the bit about the 'new ports' or bays that Roberts alluded to in one or two parts of the letters - if I remember it right, this was based on something Roberts had seen, and a copy or copies (such as a map?) may have been included in some of the original letters. He did claim in some of the letters that he had enclosed "PROOFS" - such as copies of documents, sometimes video or audio tapes, articles, sometimes photos, stuff like that. NONE of that stuff exists anymore (unless you include the one front page article of Joan Kennedy with some of Roberts' more florid writing style accompanying). Or does it? Add that to the mythical original '1000-1500 pages in all,' and the missing pages just from the 349 pages we know about, and you end up with a lot of Gemstone that is lost.

Roberts mentioned a project that had something to do with them (the US military?) setting off nukes (or something?) under some bays in the California area, I think, to create... something...? maybe new real estate or shipping lanes or something. My guess would be shipping lanes, and when you think about that, especially it in terms of OIL, the whole thing sorta starts to make you go 'hey, what?' - maybe it was just more signs of Roberts' mind deteriorating already and even if it was true, my guess is that the whole plan is long dead. Maybe. What the hell would I know? Anyway, the 'new' bays had new names and everything like 'Alioto Bay' or something along those lines. But everybody seems so bent on talking about Roberts' delusions, and this stuff is never discussed.

BRUSSELLS: A Belgian newspaper claims that President John Kennedy survived the assassination attempt in 1963.

The paper, Zondag Nieuws, says Kennedy was left a "human vegetable" after he was shot and did not die until earlier this year.

After the assassination bid, says the report, Kennedy was taken to a clinic on the Greek island Tenos, owned by Jacqueline Kennedy's second husband, Aristotle Onassis.

The paper claims Jacqueline's wedding to Onassis was a front to allow her to visit John Kennedy.

It says that after the shooting neither the general public, nor the Press ever saw Kennedy's body. It also quotes a Greek fisherman called Alexis, who says that from an island with a clear view of Tenos, he saw a man sitting alone in a wheelchair staring blankly out to sea every day.

The fisherman says that on April 16 the man was no longer there and he later saw the coffin lowered into the Aegean with Edward Kennedy and Jacqueline at the ceremony.

Peter Renzo-Tiger Behaviorist

Peter Renzo is the author of the first book on the Gemstone Files, Beyond the Gemstone Files, which came out in 1980. It is a slim book consisting mostly of the Skeleton Key (its first appearance in book form) and a rather badly-written introduction, recounting his alleged adventures in the CIA. The best part of the book actually was the photos of Mr. Renzo with his pet Siberian Tigers. Renzo is no longer interested in the Gemstone Files but his interest in tigers has continued over the years, and periodically he makes the news. Thornley was a suspect in the Garrison investigation in New Orleans, the only man to write a book about Lee Harvey Oswald before the assassination, and the founder of a bizarre religion known as Discordianism. I received an email today from the Masons about the Gemstone File! I do not know much about the Masons--it appears that they are either the Secret Rulers of the World, or a group of guys who like to get away from their wives from time to time. The quotes relating to Masonry in the Gemstone File that Stephanie Caruana provided are apparently from her edited and cleaned up version of the Gemstone letters. I haven't yet had the chance to compare them to the original but I note the reference to "cancerous crud." I know Bruce Roberts' style and I am almost certain that the original letter said "cancerous shit."

I understand that you may be tired of fielding questions about the Gemstone File, but hope that you will assist me in checking my facts.

After posting on our website <http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/anti-masonry/gemstone.html> that the Skeleton Key to the Gemstone File was noteworthy for an absence of masonic references, Stephanie Caruana emailed me with what she claimed are masonic references taken from what she termed her "fragmentary scattering of the letters and papers written by Roberts between 1968 and 1976".

I understand you to have a complete set of the 351 pages of the Gemstone File. Caruana claims Brussell received photocopies of 360 pages from Roberts but doesn't tell me how many she has. She does claim to have an additional two letters to heads of state in 1975, that she got directly from Roberts in 1975.

Stephanie Caruana claimed in an email exchange with me that you most likely received your copy from Tom Davis, and that you possibly gave a copy to Jim Moore.

Caruana identified five references to Freemasonry for me from what she termed her "fragmentary scattering of the letters and papers written by Roberts between 1968 and 1976."

My questions to you:1. How many pages do you have and from who did you receive them?

2. Did you give James L. Moore his copy, or are you aware if he has a set?

3. Is there any lingering doubt that Caruana wrote the Skeleton Key?

4. Not knowing if Caruana's set is in the same order as yours, can you tell me if the following excerpts appear in your copies, and if so, do they appear in the same form?

JK: The Gemstone Files were a conspiratorial document of (depending on who you listen to) roughly a thousand pages put together by a character named Bruce Roberts in the early 70s. He died and a skeleton key of The Gemstone File was made apparently by a woman called Stephanie Caruana. Now I've met Stephanie and I believe she probably put the skeleton key together, there are a number of other people who claim they did. What most people have seen is the skeleton key of about 30 pages... however, that larger document varying on the version from 300-1,000 pages is actually floating around. I know of 3-4 people who have copies, however, for one reason or another I have not been able to pry a copy of the original Gemstone File out of them, nor have any other researchers who have done books on the subject; the primary reason being that people have set incredibly high dollar figures on copies of the Gemstone File and I think that most of these people who have the original are waiting for their ship to come in...and to get a big buck sale on their original file.

As I have said I have a copy of the larger Gemstone File, which I will post very soon.

Hustler Publishes the Skeleton Key

The Skeleton Key first came out in photocopied form. There were three versions, dated April, May and June of 1975, written by Stephanie Caruana. I have the May and June versions but not the April one. It was then published in City of San Francisco magazine--a fact which escaped the authors of books on the Gemstone File. The Key first came to widespread public attention when an edited version of it appeared in Larry Flynt's Hustler magazine.

The Key was preceded by a preface byeditor John G. Clancy:

"Throughout history, whenever new voices become powerful and commanding, there is a traceable pattern of violent response. Whether from the right or left, there is a stealthy, savage reaction, like a shaft of ramrod steel. From Jesus Christ to Chile's Salvador Allende, the markings are clear. Action calls forth reaction, and nowhere is this more clear than in the savage history of our own country: Abraham Lincoln, Huey Long, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and all the others whose cries for justice have been stilled by the staccato burst of a gun. These are the facts of our political life. Sudden death is not just an overtime in professional football. The article that follows, the Gemstone File - a condensation of a thousand-page manuscript - may be considered by many to be a work of madness. But remember, through all the ages, all innovative works of genius have been thought to be the products of insanity. One need only reflect on the spectacle of Galileo recanting before the church. It was madness - they said - for him to advance the notion that the earth moved around the sun. And they were right: It was madness, even though he was correct. The astronomer's thinking was madness because it upset the settled scheme of things and could be demonstrably proven for all to see. For that reason, Galileo's idea had to be dismissed and done away with - perhaps, just like the Gemstone File. No doubt reasonable men will say that the factual essentials of the Gemstone File are simply preposterous - because they go too far and encompass too much. I came across the following in an email from Stephanie Caruana, alleged author of the Skeleton Key. She is asking him about the Good Housekeeping cover pictured in the previous post:

I asked Roberts about it one day. As I recall, it was the day I picked him up and drove him home from the hospital. On the way, we stopped and satdown on a small bench on a hilltop overlooking San Francisco.

I said something like: "You remember that thing you wrote about Mary Jo's Liver?

He nodded.

I said, "Well...it seems to me that that may be the most astonishing pieceof writing I ever read. But I read it at Mae's, and I don't have a copy. Could I have one?"

He said, "I'll look for it and give you one sometime." (Buried somewhere in the stack of stuff he had written two years earlier. Ancient history. But he never did.)

I said, "How did you happen to write that?" (It's different from anything else I have seen from him.)

He shrugged. "I was in a funny mood."

Stephanie Caruana also put out this booklet a few years ago. Copies may be available from the author. It contains, as the central blurb says, excerpts from Bruce Robert's Gemstone File. The excerpts are edited and cleaned up a bit, in a largely unsuccessful effort to make Roberts look, well, more rational. One day soon I will post the whole thing on the internet. Except for that central box the rest of this graphic is based on one page of the 350 or so pages of Bruce Robert's letters--a unique page which he based on a Good Housekeeping cover. Liver eating is an important theme in his writings.

The Gemstone File is one of the first areas I looked into relating to the Kennedy assassination.

Here is a brief summary of what I found:

1. Most people have only seen The Skeleton Key to the Gemstone File which is a brief summary, approximately 23 pages of the actual Gemstone File which was consisted of about 350 pages of letters of the late Bruce Roberts which Stephanie Caruana saw in the files of the late Mae Brussell. There have been six books written about Gemstone and none of the authors of those books had ever seen the Roberts letters (Kenn Thomas had one page which he received from Martin Cannon--the author of an internet article titled Gemstone Exposed. Martin Cannon has a copy of the whole set and so do I. One day soon I will post the whole thing.

2. These six books all say that the Skeleton Key was first published in Hustler in 1979. Not true--I located a version of the Key which was published in City of San Francisco magazine in 1975. This version has a few interesting differences from other versions--for one thing it lists the Mossad as a participant in the JFK conspiracy. This magazine (edited by Warren Hinckle and published by Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather) also contains an account by a group called the DNA Research Collective of their meeting with Bruce Roberts. This group also put on a play about Jack Ruby called Sparky and Truth Detector.

3. Bruce Roberts was somewhere between extremely eccentric and clinical. Nonetheless he may have had an actual source on the assassination. According to Stephanie Caruana (the author of the Skeleton Key) his brother Dayle was married to a woman Marina whose brother Antonio Iglesias had knowledge of the assassination. He was described as a CIA and Mafia connected anti-Castro Cuban. (Aren't they all?)

Further research indicates that he existed and that his full name was Antonio Iglesias Pons--a member of Brigade 2506 and described in one CIA document as a "former employee" of the CIA. This individual is also mentioned as being involved in the year 2000 plot to kill Castro which was headed by Luis Posada Carriles--recently in the news.

4. The Skeleton Key mentions "Project Star"--described as a top-secret study of the assassination conducted by Rand. Roberts had no inside source here--this study was mentioned in an article in Ramparts by Anthony Russo (associated with Daniel Ellsberg in the Pentagon Papers case.) Penn Jones also picked up on this reference. This study did exist and was conducted by DARPA (actually known as ARPA at the time as I recall.) It was a study of Presidential Security. I have a list of the Project Star reports but not the reports themselves.

The source who provided that document to me, James L. Moore, has also claimed to be the real author of the Skeleton Key. I believe that he may have submitted the Skeleton Key to Hustler before they published it, but that they already had it from other sources.
